VERB PHRASE AND TENSES (Present and Past)

A. Verb Phrases

Essentially, verb phrase is a non-self-contained verb (consisting of more than one word) but still meaningful / functioning as a verb. Verb Phrase is a combination of words (a verb + a preposition or verb + adverb) which when used simultaneously has a different meaning to the original verb.

Formula : Auxiliary verb + main verb = Verb Phrase

Verb Phrase Form

The verb phrase in English has the following form:

1. main verb

This form explains that verbs can only be used in Present form (eg, are, like, play), or Past form (ie, were, liked, played).

2. an auxiliary verb (be) and a main verb in –ing form

This form describes the verbs used in the ongoing time (continuous).

3. an auxiliary verb (have) and a main verb with past participle (V3)

This form describes the verb used in the aspect that has occurred (perfect). A verb with have / has shown Present Perfect, while a verb with had Past Perfect shows.

4. an auxiliary verb (have + been) and a main verb in the –ing form

This form describes a verb that describes activities that have occurred and are in progress at a certain time (perfect continous).

5. modal verb (may, might, can, could, must, shall, should, will would) and a main verb

This form describes a verb by using a modal form.

B. Tenses

1. Simple Present Tense

Simple present tense is a verb form to express facts, habits, or events that occur at this time.
Example of sentences:

2. Present Continuous Tense

The present continuous tense is often called the present progressive tense is the tense that describes the work that is happening today. Is said to be present because of current and said continuous because the work being done (in progress or in progress).

3. Present Perfect Tense

Preasent perfect tense is used to express an activity or situation that has been started in the past and has been completed at a certain point in time in the past or still continues until now.

Description of time used is:

since last week

for two years
There is also some form of description of the time lying before Past Participle (third verb form / V3) except for the word yet located after V3. T

4. Present Perfect Continuous

The present perfect continuous talks about an action that started in the past and continues in the present.
Adverb of time : “since” and “for” (since, since July 2013, recently, the whole days, still anymore, long, for ten years)

5. Simple Past Tense

We use the Simple past to talk about actions that happened at a specific time in the past.
Adverb of time : yesterday, the day before yesterday, this morning, this noon, just now, last night, last month, a moment ago, an hour ago, a few days ago, a few minutes ago.

6. Past Continuous Tense

Continuous tense talks about an action taking place at a certain time in the past.
Adverb of time : yesterday, last morning, all day yesterday, at that time, at seven o'clock last night

7. Past Perfect Tense

The past perfect tense speaks of something that states that an action has been completed at a point in the past before another action takes place.
The time description used in the form of Past Perfect Tense is : ...after, when... , before... ,  ...until

Tesis, Antitesis dan Sintesis

Tesis                :
Palang pintu kereta api menyelamatkan pengendara dari kereta api yang melintas.

Antitesis          :
  • Adanya pengendara yang masih nekat menerobos palang pintu kereta api pada saat detik terakhir palang pintu tertutup, sehingga dapat menyebabkan kecelakaan.
  • Adanya palang pintu kereta api yang terlambat ditutup karena kurangnya komunikasi atau kelalaian petugas yang bekerja.
  • Tidak adanya palang pintu di beberapa perlintasan kereta api menjadi salah satu penyebab terjadinya kecelakaan.
  • Adanya palang perlintasan kereta api yang masih menggunakan metode manual, yang terdampak pada kesalahan operatornya itu sendiri dan berdampak pada kecelakaan.


Sintesis            :
            Palang pintu kereta api dapat menyelamatkan penegendara dari kereta api yang melintas, asalkan pengendara tidak nekat menerobos palang pintu kereta api. Kemudian komunikasi antara petugas palang pintu dengan petugas pusat dapat berjalan dengan baik. Dan tersedianya palang pintu pada setiap perlintasan kereta api untuk mengurangi terjadinya kecelakaan.

Bahasa Indonesia

Penalaran adalah suatu proses berfikir yag sistematis untuk memperoleh suatu kesimpulan.
Proposisi adalah istilah yang digunkan untuk kalimat pernyataan yang memiliki arti penuh dan utuh. Proposisi berbentuk kalimat berita netral. Kalimat tanya, kalimat perintah, kalimat harapan, dan kalimat inversi tidak disebut proposisi. Term adalah kata yang dapat dijadikan subjek atau predikat. Kumpulan dari term dapat disebut proposisi.
Konsep lingkaran euler 
1.      Semua S adalah semua P, Suatu perangkat yang tercakup dalam  subjek sama dengan perangkat yang terdapat dalam predikat.
Contoh :
·         Semua  senang adalah semua tidak sedih
·         Semua mahal adalah semua tidak murah
·         Semua jujur adalah semua tidak bohong.
2.       Semua S adalah P, Suatu perangkat yang tercakup dalam subjek menjadi bagian dari perangkat predikat.
Contoh :
·         Semua makhluk ciptaan tuhan
·         Semua gula rasanya manis
·         Semua api itu panas
3.      Tidak satupun S adalah P, Suatu perangkat yang tercakup dalam subjek berada di luar perangkat predikat, dengan kata lain, antara subjek dan predikat tidak ada relasi.
Contoh :
·         Tidak satupun ayam adalah bertaring
·         Tidak satupun wanita adalah berjenggot
·         Tidak satu pun bapak adalah wanita
4.      Sebagian S adalah P, Suatu perangkat predikat merupakan bagian  dari perangkat subjek.
Contoh :
·         Sebagian planet adalah berpenghuni
·         Sebagian laki-laki adalah berambut panjang
·         Sebagian yang bernafas adalah mahluk hidup
5.      Sebagian S tidaklah P, Sebagian perangkat yang mencakup dalam  subjek berada diluar perangkat predikat.
Contoh :
·         Sebagian bangku tidaklah terbuat dari besi
·         Sebagian kopi tidaklah manis
·         Sebagian hidup tidaklah menyenangkan
Jenis – Jenis Proposisi  :
Berdasarkan Benuknya
Proposisi Tunggal hanya mengandung satu pernyataan.
Contoh : Setiap makhluk hidup pasti bernapas

Proposisi majemuk, mengandung lebih dari satu pernyataan.
Contoh :  Setiap warga negara harus menyadari hak dan tanggung jawabnya
                Setiap warga Negara harus menyadari hak
                Dan setiap warga Negara harus menyadari tanggung jawabnya.

Berdasarkan Sifatnya
Proposisi kategorial, hubungan antara subjek dan predikat terjadi dengan tanpa syarat.
Contoh : Semua wajib pajak wajib bayar pajak.

Proposisi kondisional, hubungan antara subjek dan predikat terjadi dengan suatu syarat tertentu.
Contoh :  
(kondisional hipotesis) Jika hari ini tidak hujan, Mirna pasti akan menepati janjinya.
(kondisional disjungtif) Dia tidak jadi dating karena sibuk atau malas.

Berdasarkan Kualitasnya
Proposisi positif (afirmatif) adalah proposisi yang membenarkan adanya persesuaian hubungan antara subjek dan predikat.
Contoh : Harimau adalah hewan buas.

Proposisi negatif adalah proposisi yang menyatakan bahwa antara subjek dan predikat tidak mempunyai hubungan.
Contoh : Semua aves bukanlah omnivore

Berdasarkan Kuantitasnya
Proposisi umum (universal), predikat proposisi membenarkan atau mengingkari seluruh subjeknya.
Contoh : Semua kucing bukanlah tikus
               Tidak satupun kucing adalah tikus

Ciri-ciri universal afirmatif : semua, setiap, tiap, masing-masing, apapun.
Ciri-ciri universal negatif : tidak satu pun, tak seorang pun.

Proposisi khusus, predikat proposisi hanya membenarkan atau mengingkari sebagian subjeknya.
Contoh :
Sebagian mahasiswa pulang ke kampung halaman untuk menghabiskan liburannya.
Ciri-ciri proposisi khusus : kata sebagian, sebagian banyak, beberapa, sering, kadang-kadang, dalam keadaan tertentu.

Penalaran dapat dibedakan menjadi :
Penalaran deduktif, pernyataan yang lebih umum kemudian menghasilkan kesimpulan yang khusus.
Penalaran induktif, pernyataan – pernyataan khusus kemudian menghasilkan kesimpulan yang umum.
Silogisme merupakan bentuk penalaran dengan cara menghubung-hubungkan dua pernyataan yang berlainan untuk dapat ditarik simpulannya.

Unsur – unsuryang terdapat dalam Silogisme :
·         Premis Umum (Premis Mayor), rumus PU : semua A=B
·         Premis Khusus (Premis Minor), rumus PK : semua C=A
·         Simpulan, sumus S : semua C=B
·          
Jenis Silogisme :
Silogisme kategorial adalah silogisme yang terjadi dari tiga proposisi. Dua proposisi merupakan premis dan satu proposisi merupakan simpulan.
Contoh :
PU       : Semua mahasiswa adalah lulusan SLTA
PK       : Baim adalah mahasiswa
S          : Baim lulusan SLTA
Silogisme hipotetis adalah silogisme yang terdiri atas premis mayor yang berproposisi kondisional hipotesis. Kalau premis minornya membenarkan anteseden, simpulannya membenarkan konsekuen. Kalau premis minornya menolak anteseden, simpulannya juga menolak konsekuen.
Contoh :
PU       : Jika tidak ada air, maka manusia akan kehausan
PK       : Air tidak ada
S          : Jadi, manusia akan kehausan
Proposisi alternatif yaitu bila premis minornya membenarkan salah satu alternatif, simpulannya akan menolak alternatif yang lain.
Contoh :
PU       : Anak itu berada di Bandung atau Bogor.
PK       : Anak itu berada di Bandung.
S          : Jadi, anak itu tidak berada di Bogor.
Entimen, suatu silogisme yang tidak mempunyai premis mayor karena premis mayor itu sudah diketahui secara umum, yang dikemukakan hanya premis minor dan simpulan.
Rumus:  C=B karena C=A
Contoh :
PU       : Binatang mamalia melahirkan anak dan tidak bertelur.
PK       : Ikan paus termasuk binatang mamalia.
S          : Ikan Paus melahirkan anak dan tidak bertelur.
Entimen           : Ikan Paus melahirkan anak dan tidak bertelur karena Ikan paus termasuk binatang mamalia.
